There is something undeniably seductive about apartment gardening. I don’t know if it’s the fact that you have little of your own personal space to grow, or just the idea that you can do it year round and without much concern over preserving the soil. Either way, it does feel great. And it can actually be quite profitable as well.
Apartment gardeners can have a lot of fun experimenting with the various ways of incorporating a small plot of apartment garden into their already existing outdoor gardens, patios, porches, and yards. They can also use their outside space as a great place to spend time with family and friends. It’s easy to become self-conscious about your apartment gardening “loss” if you’re not doing something differently to make up for it. And you’re right to be. It’s very easy to lose sight of your goals when you’re tied down too tightly to your apartment gardening schedule.
One thing to remember about apartment gardening is that it needs a little TLC from time to time. And here’s where I usually come in! My biggest problem with apartment gardening weeds. They love to cover up your newly sown row of vegetables or plants and make them practically useless before they’re even planted. The best way to combat this is to be patient. A little patience goes a long way.
Another problem with apartment gardening weeds that would sprout like wild mushrooms from my newly plowed vegies. I used to pull out all of the dead grass and weeds on my garden beds and throw them in the compost pile at home. This was good for me, because I could keep an eye on things and cut away any excess dirt that would help slow the growth of the new shoots. I still occasionally cut away some of the weed growth, but more often than not, just plow the whole area and let it go. What I like about this method is that you can actually see the results of your gardening almost immediately.
My final challenge with my apartment planting was the constant battle with bugs. Bugs were always coming out of no where and bothering my veggies. I actually spent a lot of time washing dishes to try to get the bugs off of my food. I even sprayed my food with bug repellent and some insecticide to kill any eggs that were left behind. But this only worked for a short period of time before the bugs would come right back.
It didn’t help that during one of our cold days, there would be rodents running around my apartment. I would put on a pair of mittens and trap the mice and rats that came into my apartment. I would then lock all of the doors and windows and hope that the rodents would stay away from my apartment. This didn’t usually work because most of them would find a way to get back into my building.
After trying so many ways to get rid of these animals, I decided that I needed to do something different to make my apartment garden look better and healthier. I bought some low maintenance plants and vegetables to grow. I planted low maintenance plants in my apartment that were actually helping to keep my soil better. The result was beautiful and thriving plants that helped my apartment to look better.
After changing up the soil and growing vegetables like lettuce and beans, I also decided that I needed some decorations for my space. Some candles and some potted plants went very well with my apartment gardening experience. I was very happy with the results of all of my work. I don’t have a problem growing healthy plants or even enjoying the work of growing them. Does apartment gardening feel good?
